Insurance Coverage
If You Have Insurance
In most cases Federal law requires that insurance companies cover the cost of reconstructive breast surgery for women who've undergone a mastectomy. This includes coverage for procedures that restore and achieve symmetry on the opposite side of the breast. For more information, see http://www.cancercare.org/.
If You Do Not Have Insurance
If you are not covered by an insurance plan, there are several options you can pursue to help you cover the cost of reconstructive surgery.
If you live near a university that has a medical center, investigate resident programs – they sometimes take patients at more reasonable rates and receive state aid to treat patients in need.
The Cancer Care Organization provides a free Helping Hand Resource Guide. See http://www.cancercare.org/ for more information.
